about

According to my records, Napalm Beach played four shows in December 1982 - three at the Met on December 10, December 18, and December 31, and one at the Golden Crown in Seattle on December 17. Both the December 10 and December 31 shows were recorded by Portland engineer Tom Robinson of Concert Sound; Robinson was doing live sound for Greg Sage and the Wipers at this time, and he also did cassette duplication, including the early Sub Pop releases. There is a bootleg floating around YouTube with some cuts from the Golden Crown in 1982; possibly it was this show, though my records show Napalm Beach having played eight shows at the Golden Crown in 1982. February 19th, 1983 Golden Crown co-owner John Loui, was killed along with 12 others in the infamous Wah Mee Massacre. After this, the Golden Crown stopped booking music for some time. Meanwhile on New Years Day 1983, Portland's Met - which was in the location where Dante's is today - had suddenly closed down. Other clubs in Portland and Seattle closed down around the same time including the Gorilla Room in Seattle, and in Portland, Astor Park, the Urban Noise, and the Long Goodbye. Eager to play and lacking local venues, Napalm Beach moved to San Francisco, traveling back and forth to Portland and Seattle to play shows as new clubs opened up, like the Metropolis in Seattle and Satyricon in Portland. They returned to Portland in 1985, largely as a result of their success headlining at the Satyricon.

Originally distributed on cassette, Napalm Beach's Live At the Met set from December 31, 1983 has been available probably since 1984. This performance, however, from three weeks earlier, has been locked away in the Tom Robinson's archives. Tom was kind enough to pass it along to me when I purchased the Moving To And Fro tapes, and Seattle producer Jack Endino digitized the tracks and mixed it down for me.
